GROOTE KERK | sLAweLOSIE

The Groote Kerk, meaning "Great Church", in Cape Town is a historic church with deep roots in the city’s colonial past and served as a central place of worship for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) settlers. The Slawelosie or Slave Lodge, located directly across from the Groote Kerk, housed enslaved people brought to the Cape Colony by the VOC. My family tree includes ancestors from both communities.
